Two Beavers Are Better than One

What’s going on with “How I Met Your Mother” this year? After a couple of mediocre seasons, the show feels re-energized. They haven’t trotted out a lot of high-profile stunt casting, and instead of developing plots around relationships, they’re having fun again. Last week’s episode, in which Barney and Robin competed to see who could touch the most museum pieces was brilliant (and the monocle jokes were top notch), while several weeks back, there was the The Race. “HIMYM” has its legs back, and I think much of that can be attributed to the fact that Ted hasn’t been in a real relationship this season. He’s no longer annoying — Ted is one of the better parts of the show now, while even Barney’s schtick has been revitalized now that he’s no longer dating Robin.

Last night, Robin Sparkles made an encore appearance, with Alan Thicke no less, as we visited the Canadian show that she used to star in, a kid’s show with a decidedly porn edge, a revelation that damn near reversed the slap bet victor. It was goddamn fantastic, culminating in the reunion of Robin Sparkles and Jessica Glitter, who sang the old children’s classic, “Two Beavers Are Better than One.”

It’s a joke that’s even better following Cobie Smulders’ decision to pose for Maxim magazine so soon after giving birth.

And the pull quote here, that would be an exciting new development.
