I was going to write up a Pajiba Love tonight, but very little happened this weekend that didn’t involve John McCain, and as soon as I saw Donald Trump trying to wake John McCain from the dead, I thought, “You know what? I’m going to skip it this weekend.”

What I will not skip, however, is the season three trailer for True Detective season 3, because this is straight-up in my wheelhouse. I loved the first season of True Detectiveuntil that lousy, anti-climactic finale — and I spent almost as much time searching for something worthwhile in season two as I did in searching for meaning in the first season.

This third season, though? Creator Nic Pizzolatto — who is in all likelihood a problematic, hot-headed, temperamental, pretentious narcissist — actually had time to sit down and properly work out a story, and he managed to land an impeccable cast, led by Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali. He’ll be joined by Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, Scott McNairy (Scoot!), Mamie Gummer, and Stephen Dorff. Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room) directed the first two episodes, while the phenomenal Daniel Sackheim (Better Call Saul) took over after Saulnier encountered “scheduling conflicts” (which I believe may be code for, “I can’t work for this a**hole anymore.”)

Most intriguing of all, the third season will be set in Northeast Arkansas, where both myself and Pizzolatto attended the University of Arkansas.

As for the trailer? I genuinely can’t tell if season three is going to be amazing (Ali) or a complete trainwreck (that Mamie Gummer character has echoes of Vince Vaughn in S2), but I do know I am absolutely stoked for it to come out, so we can all find out whether Pizzolatto is a troubled and troubling genius or a B-writer who Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and Cary Fukunaga made look like a genius.

True Detective season 3 will premiere in January.
