Scattered Thoughts with 3 Episodes of 'This Is Us' Left This Season

There are only three episodes of This Is Us remaining this season. The end of the season sneaked up on me (although, because of weeks off, it’s still a month and a half before the end). Here are some scattered thoughts:

Every season picks up on their birthday, and we’ve seen a flash-forward to their 40th birthday (and therefore, next year’s season premiere), and in it, Kevin is with his pregnant fiancee, the identity of whom we do not yet officially know (It’s Sophie, right? It’s definitely Sophie). We know that there are three episodes left. We also know that next week’s episode will see the Pearsons from three different timelines visit New York City. In the present timeline, that’s for the premiere of Kevin’s M. Night Shyamalan film, and the episode will open up a rift between Kevin and Randall.

One of the other remaining episodes — presumably the penultimate episode — will be an “out-there-conceptually episode” between Randall and his new therapist, played by Pamela Adlon, who was introduced in last night’s episode.

That doesn’t leave a lot of time for the series to introduce (or reintroduce) Kevin’s fiancee or explain why Kate is at the family cabin on their 40th birthday without a wedding ring and without Toby, despite the fact that — in last night’s episode — “Kate and Toby have reached a really, really good place.”

What we can say based on the future scenes with baby Jack is that Toby or Kate or Toby and Kate both stay in the same house where they currently live, because Jack continues to grow up playing music in that same garage.

Is Toby Kate’s perfectly cooked waffle? Or does she need to throw another one out?

— In this week’s episode, we also learn that Rebecca is suffering from a mild cognitive disorder, which is likely the result of Alzheimer’s. Doctors have a “clear course of action,” whatever that is supposed to mean. We do know that she will live for many more years. We do not know, however, what kind of quality of life she can expect in those years.

— The story that Rebecca told about the origins of “Our House” is 100 percent true. That, however, was not Joni Mitchell’s old house, just one that looks like it. I do not like the song “Our House,” but in the context of this episode, it made me teary. Stupid This Is Us.

— That continuity tracks in this episode. Kevin needed a 1991 card “from last year” to finish off the set, while Kate was watching the music video for Blind Melon’s “No Rain,” released in 1992.

— It was random that Kevin needed specifically a John Candelaria card to finish off his set. I absolutely remember him; longtime Pittsburgh Pirate before becoming a journeyman. Lost his son tragically in ‘85.
