The 'Significant Death' on this Week's 'Modern Family' Was Lame (And Not Manny)

I haven’t watched Modern Family in I don’t know how many years, but based on how old Lily looks now, I’m going to say maybe 15 years? They grow up so fast.

Meanwhile, Alex — who was in high school last time I watched — is like 30 now and dating the dude from American Vandal season 1.

Manny, however, wasn’t in this episode — I don’t know where he is — so I couldn’t tell you if he is still the worst character on television, though based on last night’s episode, it’s safe to say that our theory that every character on Modern Family is secretly a serial killer still holds up!

Anyway, I watched this week’s Modern Family because it teased a “significant death in the family,” and I wanted to see who died, but mostly, I wanted to find out who finally had enough and decided to leave the show (is that what happened to Manny? Where is Manny? Did Luke eat Manny, because Luke has grown like 4 feet since I last saw him).

Anyway, based on the episode — a Halloween special, which the show used to do fairly well — it’s safe to say that there’s no reason to start watching Modern Family again. Even with a “significant” character death, the formula hasn’t changed. And who was the “significant death”?

DeDe Pritchett. Cam and Claire’s mom, played by Shelley Long. She has been in eight episodes. Out of 232. She died peacefully in her sleep.

That’s lame.

And so was the episode, which saw Mitchell and Claire try and process their mother’s death, while Jay tried to ferret out who ate his hoagie, but the hoagie was just a metaphor for his feelings. Alex had sex with American Vandal guy because that’s how she copes (how does she still live at home? She must have gone to college. She was the smart one!); Haley ate her feelings, which is funny because Haley never eats (har har!); and Luke — I don’t know what Luke does. He plays dumb, because everyone on this show is a serial killer. Oh, and Lily haunted Gloria with an action figure that looked like DeDe, while Phil and Cam ate ice cream and shared old stories about DeDe while stuck in a Halloween parade in West Hollywood.

So, same old, same old. There was neither anything significant about the death nor the episode.
