Every Fallout fan knows and loves Dogmeat. The loyal NPC (Non-Player Canine) appeared in the 1997 game, and made subsequent appearances in Fallout 2, 3, and 4. Players spent entire campaigns doing everything they could to keep their pup alive until Bethesda finally made him immortal in Fallout 4. So while he isn’t the focus of Fallout’s first trailer, he’s definitely the most welcome part.
Fallout follows Vault Dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell) as she ventures from the relative safety of her underground bunker into the contaminated Wasteland. As several commenters pointed out on my last Fallout feature, I had my timeline all messed up. I blame the THC. At any rate, the trailer gives us a glimpse of all the main characters, as well as some of the towns, mutations, and irradiated creatures that make America’s remains their home.
Amazon checked all the boxes for this one. Spotted creatures include radroaches, a Yao guai (mutated killer bear) ripping the head from a Brotherhood of Steel soldier, and a giant carnivorous salamander (a Gulper, maybe?). A Vault is in the midst of societal collapse and there’s a cyclopean Overseer played by Chris Parnell. We get to see Walton Goggins’s real face before it’s melted off and he becomes The Ghoul — after which we see him take out multiple raiders, with the distinctive sound of a classic pipe-gun. Verti-birds and Pip-Boys abound. And the robots! Auto-turrets and a Mister Handy! Between this, The Boys, Gen V, and Invincible, Prime’s become my go-to channel for absurd violence.
It’s impossible to say whether Fallout reaches the lofty peaks promised by a teaser full of nostalgic music and murder, but I live in hope. We’ll find out when it premieres on Prime next April 12.
