Folks, on May 31st, 2019, HBO will finally air the Deadwood movie, something that honestly most of us never thought we’d ever see. In fact, one of the people who never thought we’d see it is Timothy Olyphant, the man who plays Seth Bullock in Deadwood. “I always thought it was never going to happen. And the false starts I never, quite honestly, paid attention to. It was white noise,” he told TVLine.

But hell if the damn thing didn’t finally come together, only there was one hitch: Olyphant himself, who never believed that he’d actually have to make a decision about whether to return to Deadwood. And then, suddenly, whether the Deadwood movie would happen all came down to whether Olyphant would sign on.

“My mindset was, “S-t. I guess I’m going to have to make some kind of decision here.” It was a very curious process. I did not expect to be in the position to actually have to make a decision; I just assumed it would go away. It’s a curious [thing] deciding on whether to do a job when all of your old friends have already committed to it and you kind of think, “Well, I’ve never been in a position to be such an asshole.”

He had a particular concern on his mind. “High school reunions can be a lot of fun. But repeating your sophomore year? Not so fun. And I couldn’t tell if this was going to be the former or the latter. I didn’t know what it was going to feel like. Is it just going to be a lovely reunion, or is going to feel like, “Jesus, I’m being asked to do things I regret”?

Fortunately, Olyphant decided not to be the asshole in the room, and he has no regrets about that. “It was way more moving than I could’ve imagined. And way more rewarding than I could’ve imagined. I underestimated how much those people meant to me.” In fact, he “would do it again in a heartbeat,” although I would not expect another Deadwood movie.

In the meantime, Olyphant — who now appears in the phenomenal third season of Santa Clarita Diet, will also star in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a movie that allowed him to work with the late Luke Perry, for whom Olyphant has a lot of admiration. “We kept looking at each other like, ‘How’d we get in? I don’t know who let us in, but they let us in.’”

Are you madly in love with him yet? Because if you’re not, this is the hat he wears away from cameras, and when he’s in public.

I would kill a small child to be able to pull off that hat.
