My New Year’s resolution this year is to learn and write about more topics of which I have little knowledge so that everyone here will also know a little bit more about things that they previously did not. For instance, did you know that there is an extreme sport called slap fighting? It’s exactly what you might think: Two people stand at arm’s length and exchange open-handed slaps. They are not allowed to move, flinch, or defend themselves in any way. Here’s a clip:

This is a ridiculous sport. One guy has died from it. Naturally, it’s only been approved in Nevada. There is also going to be a series devoted to the sport on TBS due out this year. It’s called Power Slap and comes from Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Or at least that was the plan. It’s unclear, however, whether TBS will move ahead with the series after Dana White engaged in an unsanctioned slapping of his wife on New Year’s Eve. From TMZ:

The UFC honcho and Anne White, who’ve been married for 26 years, were celebrating Saturday night with friends in El Squid Roe … but things took a turn shortly after they all welcomed in 2023 at midnight.

The couple and their group were in a VIP area above the dance floor, and when Dana leaned over to say something to Anne … she reacted by slapping him across the face. Dana immediately slapped her back in the face, before friends jumped in and pulled them apart — and it all played out in plain view of patrons down below.

The two were apparently drunk, not that that’s an excuse, and White is “embarrassed” by his behavior. “You’ve heard me say for years, ‘There’s never ever an excuse for a guy to put his hands on a woman,’ and now here I am on TMZ talking about it.” White may say that, but he also brought Greg Hardy into the UFC back in 2018. Hardy was an NFL player who was briefly suspended after he was convicted of assaulting an ex-girlfriend by grabbing her, throwing her into furniture, strangling her, and threatening to kill her.

Alas, it is unlikely that Dana White will suffer any consequences from TBS or his UFC partner, ESPN, over the slap, despite the video evidence. White is the face of the UFC, and the UFC is too integral to the success of ESPN for the company — Disney — to do anything about it.
