Valorie Curry, who plays the MAGA-inspired Firecracker superhero character on Amazon’s The Boys, made a video on social media asking to set “boundaries” after an “uncomfortable experience at a fan convention.”
Seeing only that, my first thought was of the video that Chappelle Roan made a couple of weeks ago demanding the same of fans who think she owes them more than public performances for which they purchase tickets. Roan has set the tone for a new generation of celebrities who do not believe that being an artist means giving up their private lives to random jackasses who demand selfies and autographs.
However, in this particular instance, Valorie Curry was at a fan convention, which is a safe haven where jackasses can pay for the right to demand selfies and autographs. What could have possibly prompted Curry to post a video where she said the following?
“I know people saw a character that I played do some really extreme things on The Boys, and I don’t care if you’re in costume, I don’t care if you’re in character - it’s not OK and it’s not funny to demand those things from me in person at my booth. It’s not OK.“Frankly, to the person who did that repeatedly today, I made it pretty clear that it wasn’t OK, and that only seemed to make this person and their friend angry. I didn’t think this needed to be explained, but I was deeply uncomfortable - it was quite clear I was uncomfortable.”
In my poor, naive mind, I thought maybe that some drunken fans were asking her to repeat some of her more outrageous MAGA-inspired lines. But I did some sleuthing, and while that would be obnoxious, what actually happened is far worse.
Curry’s character in The Boys is not just a right-wing extremist; she also knows how to soothe the temper of Homelander, the Trumpian superhero character in The Boys. She breastfeeds Homelander. And in this interaction, two guys dressed as Homelander repeatedly joked that Curry should breastfeed them, a joke that elicited no laughs from either Curry or anyone else in line, all of whom were left feeling intensely uncomfortable by the entire exchange.
In the video, Curry said that she enjoys attending fan conventions for the most part, but she won’t be able to continue “if people are acting this way because it makes me so uncomfortable - and honestly, you should know better.”
I don’t blame her. I also spent some time on Curry’s Instagram while writing this piece. She’s bad ass.
