The Boys is my favorite entertainment surprise of the last few years. Having read Garth Ennis’s original graphic novels I didn’t expect much. They were fun but not exactly deep, and the levels of sex and violence seemed untenable even on a streaming platform. I’ve never been so glad to be wrong. Eric Kripke struck entertainment gold for the second time in his life and with Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, and the terrifying Antony Starr to bring his vision to life, The Boys delivered two powerful seasons that left us all wanting more.

And more they shall provide. On the heels of Supernatural alum and latest D. Rowles man-crush Jensen Ackles as the Captain America-like Soldier Boy, comes three new cast members. Miles Gaston Villanueva, Nick Wechsler, and Sean Patrick Flanery are all aboard for Season 3. Not much is known about the characters - Supersonic, Blue Hawk, and Gunpowder, respectively - as they’re all new creations, but given their superhero status it seems unlikely they’ll be on the Boys’ side.

Villanueva is perhaps best known for his roles on Law & Order: True Crime as murderous sibling Lyle Menendez and as Owen on TV’s newest version of Nancy Drew. Wechsler’s been on television since the 1990s, with long stints on Roswell (Kyle Valenti) and Revenge (Jack Porter) under his belt. Most importantly, Sean Patrick Flanery of cinematic masterpiece The Boondock Saints (SHUT UP IT’S RIDICULOUS BUT I LOVE IT) always provides a good time. He was also in The Dead Zone, Powder, and what seems like half the television shows and movies put out in the past few decades. The dude works is what I’m saying.

There’s no release date yet but it appears production is ticking right along so with any luck we’ll get more graphic violence and weird sex deaths by the end of the year. I’m not sure how one tops Stumpfront and exploding whales, but like a pre-Seven Starlight, I have faith.
