Because of the writers’ strike — and shrinking output, in general — there weren’t as many great shows to be nominated this year, compared to years past where a show as good as Better Call Saul was reduced to an also-ran compared to Succession. This is especially true this year in the television drama category, where Shōgun may be the only series that qualifies as legitimately great (and Shōgun was switched from limited series to drama in the last minute after FX/Hulu decided to extend the limited series). You know drama is bad when it includes two shows that have a high percentage of hate watchers in Gilded Age and The Morning Show, as well as the final season of a show long past its expiration in The Crown. How weak was this year’s drama roster? Check out the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category. That says all we need to know.

The comedy category, however, remains strong, especially now that they’ve finally finally given Reservation Dogs its due, although that was offset slightly by the ridiculous inclusion of Palm Royale, one of the year’s biggest disappointments.

Limited series are fairly strong, too, but that’s in part because it includes anthology series like True Detective: North Country and Fargo, in addition to what was likely the biggest breakout hit in streaming this year, Baby Reindeer.
