We live in a world of targeted advertisement. Just the other day, my wife and I were discussing car seats and since then, any website I go to has ads for car seats. It is creepy and invasive. So, I had to do a double-take when watching a segment from the newest episode of Conan.
The premise is simple: If you’ve lost your sense of taste and smell due to COVID-19, you can order Bland Box. A box of food that is tasteless, odorless, and colorless, so you’re not missing out if you eat it. The sketch itself is hilarious, especially with the design of the food. But it did make me think, “How is this not a thing yet?”
I’ve seen ads for COVID face shields, COVID bodysuits, even social distancing sombreros (OK, I made that one up). My point is that businesses can get so specific with their marketing and production, I’m floored we haven’t see food marketed at people with COVID. Yet. There’s a chance that life could eventually imitate art. Like how Chapelle’s Show created a “wife-swapping” show in a sketch and, eventually, that made its way into real life.
Only time will tell. While I hope I don’t need it for COVID reasons, I’d get behind a bland meal plan! If I don’t look forward to the food, maybe then I won’t want to eat it as much? Conan may be on to something…
