It’s a holiday weekend, so I’m not going to make you all suffer through some lame preamble about seasons changing or school starting or why it’s OK to ignore all that and just sit on your couches watching TV. If you’re reading this, you already know being a binge-dulgent layabout is the best. So let’s get down to business — starting with OMFG is Cartoon Bob Odenkirk a total snack or what?
So there’s a trippy new cartoon coming to Amazon, and it stars Alita: Battle Angel’s Rosa Salazar as a young woman who survives a near-fatal accident only to, like, come unstuck in time or something? And then she starts investigating her father’s death, which he claims was actually murder because now he’s showing up and talking to her? AND HE’S A WEIRDLY SEXY ANIMATED BOB ODENKIRK? I dunno if it’s all the philosophical babble and the spacey backgrounds that are accentuating him, or maybe it’s just the glasses, but it is seriously doing things for me. Anyway, the series is called Undone (Sept. 13), and it was created by BoJack Horseman’s Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, which is some pretty promising pedigree (if you’ll forgive my alliteration and unintended horse-breeding pun). Point is, GIVE IT TO ME.
Also coming to Amazon this month is the last hurrah for Transparent (Sept. 27), which kills off Jeffrey Tambor’s Maura and then… turns everything into a musical? Which honestly seems like a strategy a lot of shows should consider.
Musician biopics have certainly been having a moment, lately — and in general, it’s a moment I’m kinda bored with. Still, I’m pretty optimistic about Hulu’s upcoming Wu-Tang: An American Saga (Sept. 4), which follows the Wu-Tang Clan’s rise in 90’s New York City. Sure, it was co-created by The RZA and certainly could fall prey to some rose-tinted remembrances (and maybe some internal beefs, if U-God’s exclusion from the credits is any indication), but based on the reviews I’ve read and the trailer that’s out, it looks like it’s trying to walk a more realistic line with history — one where success isn’t destined or inevitable, and talent isn’t just a ticket out.
I gotta be honest — it’s a weird month over on Ye Olde Netflixe. For returning originals they’ve got Disentchantment: Part 2 (Sept. 20) and, uh, The Ranch: Part 7 (Sept. 13). Zach Galifianakis gets a movie-sized version of his beloved Between Two Ferns (Sept. 20), while Sacha Baron Cohen gets serious with The Spy (Sept. 6), based on the true story of Eli Cohen, the Mossad agent who went undercover in Syria. Meanwhile, Ryan Murphy’s big honking production deal with the platform is bearing fruit in the form of The Politician (Sept. 27), a presidential satire inspired by
our cruel reality high school elections starring Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jessica Lange.
If you’re in the mood for sci-fi starring blandly attractive people (Kate Bosworth! Alex Pettyfer!), Netflix has the limited series The I-Land (Sept. 12), a show about people waking up on an island… OF MYSTERIES. I think it’s supposed to be sort of like Lost meets Cube meets The Prisoner meets Jeff Probst?
So you know how musicians have been doing movies to accompany their concept albums lately? Well country music star Sturgill Simpson is taking his upcoming album, Sound & Fury, and turning it into a dystopian samurai anime (Sept. 27). But before you laugh, remember that this guy wrote the titular song from Jim Jarmusch’s zombie flick, The Dead Don’t Die, and that worked out pretty well. And let’s face it — if Beyoncé pulled this move, we’d all be cheering.
And finally, that David Tennant/Hayley Atwell joint we’ve been waiting for finally lands on Sept. 20! Criminal is a unique new police procedural that tells 12 stories in 4 different countries without ever leaving the interrogation room. But… I mean, we’re all just gonna watch it to see if Tennant is guilty, right?
