Summer is finally in full swing, and sure, you could enjoy it by camping or cooking out or hitting the beach. Or you could just take your pants off, point your Vornado at your couch, and watch some TV. No matter what: you’re the real winner, here!
Because I’m nothing if not predictable, I’m obviously just sitting here counting down the days until The Boys finally hits Prime on July 26. Why? Because it’s based on an ultra-violent comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and is being adapted by Seth Rogan, Evan Goldberg, and showrunner Eric Kripke (creator of Supernatural) into a series starring a very dangerous Karl Urban. And you know who makes being dangerous look incredibly hot? Karl Urban. Look, he even does it with a beard this time!
Prime’s also got a new movie from Mike Leigh called Peterloo, starring Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake, available on July 3, and if you haven’t seen the Andrew Garfield-starring Under The Silver Lake yet… well, that’s because A24 buried it. But it’s on Prime as of July 1, and Roxana thought it did a lot of things really well!
Hulu’s got a few returning series, like the second season of the teen thriller series Light As A Feather (July 26) or the third season of Harlots (July 10), but I think we all know which returning show really matters this month…
That’s right — Veronica Mars is back for a fourth season of beachside mayhem on July 26, and that is definitely something to celebrate. Though I’ll say this right now: if anyone hurts Veronica’s wonderful dad, I’ll riot. Enrico Colantoni is A GIFT.
And as for new series, Hulu’s launching their highly-anticipated adaptation of Four Weddings And A Funeral on July 31, starring Nathalie Emmanuel and Nikesh Patel, and co-created by Mindy Kaling. And honestly, it’s just really nice to see Missandei get a shot at a happy ending somewhere.
Orange is the New Black returns for its seventh and final season on July 26 and… oh, who am I kidding? There’s really only one show that everyone will be talking about, and it’ll be here on the Fourth of July: Stranger Things season 3! Not that I’m complaining! I, for one, am very much looking forward to the continuing babysitting adventures of Magical Sailor Scout Steve and his Ice Cream Shoppe Special Hair.
This season, Steve’s hair will be hanging out with a new character named Robin, played by Maya Hawke (daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman). And I don’t wanna jinx this, but this may be the power couple the show always needed. Unless Wynona Ryder is finally gonna hook up with Daddy Hopper, of course.
Honestly, compared to Stranger Things, everything else coming to Netflix this month kinda feels like an afterthought. David Harbour stars in a short mockumentary about his own family called, uh, Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein (July 16), and I’m pretty stoked for this tribute to the greatest food in the world called Taco Chronicles (July 12). Starbuck herself, Katee Sackhoff, is returning to space in Another Life, which also stars Selma Blair and Justin Chatwin (July 25). And Aziz Ansari returns to Netflix this month — but instead of another season of Master of None, he’s got a brand new comedy special directed by Spike Jonze called Right Now (July 9). We’ll probably hear people talking about this one too, but for very different reasons…
