What's Streaming This Month? Victorian Fairies, a Few Gelfling, and the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling

carnival row.jpg

You know, not that it’s a competition, but I think August might be the best month of the year. It should be depressing since August usually marks the moment when you realize summer has slipped through your fingers and it’s too late to do anything about it now like hastily plan a vacation or something. But instead, August is the month when nobody cares about anything anymore. It’s the year’s shrug. Your bosses are fully checked out, and probably won’t be in the office more than 50% of the time anyway. Your kids just wanna be left alone to savor their last moments of freedom before school starts. Hell, even your grass isn’t growing as fast anymore. And it’s kinda the same vibe I’m getting from our favorite streaming platforms, too! Hulu is barely going through the motions this month, Netflix’s slate is filled with new seasons of returning shows, and Amazon is dropping one big fantasy hit just in time for Labor Day. Point is, there’s some stuff to watch if you really want to. But nobody would judge you if you decided to just crack open a microbrew and go watch the flames dance in your propane grill instead.

Mmmm. Fire.

HULU

If you haven’t started it yet, Mindy Kaling’s reboot of Four Weddings and a Funeral just launched on July 31st, and I think they’re banking on everyone watching that and/or continuing to binge the new season of Veronica Mars this month. Beyond that, there’s another installment of the monthly horror anthology Into the Dark launching on August 2 called “School Spirit”, and then there’s Jawline, a documentary that premiered at Sundance about a 16-year-old streaming star trying to turn his online popularity into a ticket out of his small town (August 23):

AMAZON PRIME

If you’re still nursing your Megan Rapinoe crush (WHO ISN’T?!), you might wanna check out This Is Football, a six-part documentary about the global impact of the sport we (foolishly) call soccer (August 2). Then there’s Free Meek, a five-part documentary about rapper Meek Mills and probation reform, produced by Jay-Z (August 9). But mostly Amazon is saving up its heaviest hitter for the end of the month, when it launches the highly anticipated fantasy epic Carnival Row on August 30. Now, most people would be excited about this one because Orlando Bloom is playing a very dapper detective and Cara Delevingne is playing a faerie in this monster murder mystery, but I know the crowd I’m playing to ‘round these parts, so let me point out that Jared Harris and Indira Varma also star.

Netflix

If there’s a show you like on Netflix, there’s a good chance it’s returning this month. On August 2 the streamer is launching the third season of Dear White People, the third season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and the second season of Derry Girls. Hasan Minhaj is back with the fourth (fourth?!) season of Patriot Act on August 4, while GLOW Season Three lands on August 9,MINDHUNTER Season Two arrives August 16, and 13 Reasons Why Season Three will drop August 23.

Speaking of returning faves, Netflix is making a hard play for our collective nostalgia with two new animated movies that are technically a part of the “Netflix Family” brand but are clearly targeted to the “Netflix ME” demo: Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling debuts August 9, and… ahem… Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus hits August 16. While we’re on the topic of nostalgia, remember how Netflix was making that sequel to The Dark Crystal? Well, it’s really happening: The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will debut on August 30. And if nothing else, it certainly looks incredible:

Still, I have to be honest: There is nothing, not even that Invader Zim movie, that has me half as excited as I am for g*ddamn Wu Assassins (August 8):
