Matt Burnett and Ben Levin helped break ground in LGBTQA+ representation as writers on the Emmy-nominated cartoon series Steven Universe. Now, they’re making strides for POC representation with Craig of the Creek, a new animated show that centers on a black protagonist, who plays fun-filled games of pretend in the woods with his friends.

Black Nerd Girls got the inside scoop on Craig of the Creek with an interview with Burnett and Levin. The former explains that this show differs from Steven Universe chiefly in that it’s not a sci-fi/fantasy series. He explains, “This was like Recess in the woods. Goonies. This idea that this is the real world, but something cool could happen in it.”

While the main demographic for Craig the Creek is obviously kids, there are also some bits aimed for more “mature” audiences. For instance, My Favorite Murder podcasters Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff can be heard in an episode called “The Curse,” which they teased on their Instagram.
