Joe Biden delivered a State of The Union Address last night. Biden’s speech was praised by the media. Even Sean Hannity couldn’t help but admit that the President’s performance put a hole in their attacks on his age and competency. Biden was fiery and determined to deliver a speech that showed he was ready to hold office for another four years. We won’t know if it changed people’s minds until November, but Stephen Colbert was impressed.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert went live after Biden’s address to the nation (as he often does). His monologue covered everything from Biden’s determination to lower prescription drug prices to AI to his choice of lunch before the big night. Biden had chicken parm, and I’ve never been more jealous of the man. That he ate the food equivalent of a down comforter for your belly and didn’t just doze off mid-speech is impressive.

Colbert wasn’t without his jabs. Biden referenced a Snickers commercial that may not exist, which Colbert did not let slide. He also joked about Biden attending the 1941 State of The Union by FDR. Because, no matter how well he can give a speech, Biden isn’t going to make people forget that he is 81 years old. Is it the most important thing about him? Not really? But it is an issue that will not go away.

It was fun watching Colbert live and in the moment. The jokes were punchier and sillier. There also felt like less pressure to “nail” it. He’s having fun and being relaxed. He can’t do a live show every night but getting them on occasion is a delight that I do not take for granted. It also allowed me to skip the speech and get the gist of what happened. 9 PM was too late for me so I can only imagine how the Colbert Crew made this happen with this much energy.
