Twelve hundred and forty-two days ago to this day, the character Stan on True Detective sadly passed away. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the day after the Fourth of July, 2015. We were all gathered around our television sets watching the third episode of the second season of True Detective, before we’d fully realized what an incredible shit show it would be. In the episode, Vince Vaughn’s Frank Semyon — in a pivotal scene that would drive much of the plot forward for the rest of the season — says of Stan, “He deserved better,” suggesting that Stan had died, which came as news to the viewing audience because we had no idea who Stan was.

But Stan was Stan, y’all. He was driving force of the entire second season. He was the glue that held it together, a character briefly introduced and killed offscreen, a fact that came as much a surprise to the actor who played Stan — Ronnie Gene Blevins — as it did to us watching at home, mostly because we had no idea who Stan was.

But we’ll never forget that time that Vaughn mentioned Stan, or that scene where he pepper sprayed a guy, or that other scene where we briefly saw Stan’s dead body.

Such an indelible character. Stan will always live in our memories, as he did in the memory of Frank Semyon, who would visit Stan’s father and memorialize Stan who, again, had two brief scenes that took this author at least an hour to find buried in the two previous episodes. Blink and you’ll miss it, but oh what a presence Stan was.

R.I.P. Stan. You’ll always be in our hearts.

And to memorialize his passing, we should all watch an episode of Friends tonight.
