I have been looking forward to St. Denis Medical for a very long time. The series comes from Superstore’s Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin and looks like a cross between Scrubs and The Office … or Superstore set in a hospital (with a dash of American Auto, also written by Ledgin). The cast for the series includes Wendi McLendon-Covey, and it began to come together at the end of 2022, right around the time that The Goldbergs was winding down. It also stars, among others, Allison Tolman and David Alan Grier.
NBC gave the series the greenlight actually right in the middle of the 2023 Writers’ Strike with an eye toward premiering it in the fall. However, the strike ran long, so NBC ultimately decided to push the series into the fall of 2024. NBC has a lot of confidence in it, having already ordered a full 18-episode season.
The trailer looks fine, but there are a lot of ingredients here (and obviously, an immense amount of talent involved) to suggest that St. Denis Medical could become a rare comedy hit on network TV these days outside of Abbott Elementary. If, in fact, it is successful, it might put Bill Lawrence’s plans to reboot Scrubs on hold.
Here’s the trailer.
St. Denis Medical premieres on November 12th.
