The subgenre of science fiction that fantasizes about dystopian futures is a popular one. It’s weird how constant fears of fascism, world war, climate change, and pandemics fuel a grim outlook of the future. It’s been done to death, and more than a few recent entries should’ve been left unexplored.

One of the better ones is the Silo series by author Hugh Howey. It tells the story of an environmentally devastated America where its citizens live trapped in a massive, underground Silo. Overpopulated and in rapid decline, Silo’s authoritarian government faces an increasingly agitated population. The first story, Wool, was self-published by Howey and with an additional 4 novellas was published as a novel under the same name. Howey’s follow-ups, Shift and Dust, were nearly as good. Now Apple+ TV is bringing the tale to television with Silo, a 10-episode series with Rebecca Ferguson (Dune, Doctor Sleep) as Juliette, Wool’s main character. The teaser dropped today.

Also starring Tim Robbins, Iain Glen, Common, David Oyewolo, and a bevy of others, Silo mixes the dystopia of Snowpiercer with gaslighting reminiscent of The Village. Whether Juliette can figure out the secrets of the Silo’s mysterious IT department in time to save her Society remains to be seen. Silo’s first 2 episodes drop on May 5 and are on a weekly schedule after.
