'Yellowjackets': Who Else Might Be Alive?

There’s a lot of questions left to answer on this season of Yellowjackets but perhaps the most pressing question is who else might turn up? Obviously, there’s a lot of death to come, but we know that there are at least a few other people still alive, given Shauna’s comment to Taissa that they haven’t heard from the others “in months.” But who do we think might turn up?

In the scene with the ritualistic cannibalism, we see seven people around the fire. Assuming one or two of them are doing the butchering/cooking that gives us eight or nine survivors in that group. We’ve met five; Taissa, Shauna, Misty, Nat, and Travis (who we didn’t “meet” but we did see his body). Watching the scene where the crash survivors bury the dead, there are 18 people alive and standing in a circle around the graves, plus the assistant coach who’s missing most of one leg. We’ve seen at least one death in the wilderness, the girl (Jackie? Or do they just want us to THINK it was Jackie?) who was hunted and butchered for meat, but that leaves another 9 people who presumably die. And if we assume that every survivor we know was a member of the meat-eaters (unclear, we know for sure Misty was but it would make sense that if they were ALL cannibals then they’re all keeping their mouths shut due to mutually assured destruction if anyone talks) then that still leaves a few other survivors potentially still alive.

At this point, I assume any other high schoolers that we’ve gotten to know well enough to see more than once are being introduced either so we care about them when they die or get killed, or because they’re potential survivors out there who are sending the mystery postcards. Here are my guesses:

Jackie - I’m not convinced Jackie is the dead girl, even though we saw her necklace on the body. After all, the last person we saw wearing the necklace before the plane crash was Shauna, necklaces are highly transferrable objects. Whether Jackie is still alive, though? Probably unlikely overall. She does not seem to have much steel in her spine.

Lottie - I don’t have a lot of hope for Lottie. We’ve seen her ominously taking medication that she is now out of, her dad is the one who hired the plane that crashed, and she’s already freaking out a bit. But Courtney Eaton is a relatively prominent actor to bring on just to kill off, and she seems like she’s tuning into whatever else is going on faster than the others.

Van - Van is a strong candidate for being a survivor. She’s full of rage and clearly capable of taking care of herself. The one wrinkle here is that teenage Tai is interested in her and if teen Tai was capable of shattering someone’s tibia in a fit of pique BEFORE she was desperate and starving, I’d hate to see what she could do if a romance went south in the wilderness.

Laura Lee - The devoted Christian who confesses that she thinks she caused the plane crash because she THOUGHT the word “cunt”, a true example of the kind of hyper-narcissism common in American Evangelical Christianity. I think she’s going to stick around for a while because watching a hyper-religious teen turn feral seems to be exactly the tone this show is going for, but I don’t think she makes it out of the woods. Mostly because if she did she would ABSOLUTELY sell out the entire story and be “born again” or some other similar nonsense and make a mint leading her own megachurch.

Assistant Coach Ben - Ben is 100% a goner, though I’m not sure if it’s going to be blood poisoning, an accident since he’s missing a leg in the woods, or Misty’s creepily avid ministrations turning… even darker in order to keep her patient compliant.

Martinez the Younger - I have no hope for this kid either, and I’m not looking forward to that.

So my strongest candidate for who else might turn up this season is Van, with Lottie a distant second. Any other guesses out there, or do we think they’re holding back some characters specifically for the surprise later?
