Should Hannah Gadsby Have Hosted The Emmys?

Hannah Gadsby has had an incredible year. After considering quitting comedy, she did a show about it called Nanette, which won wild praise and started a conversation about the power and definition of stand-up. And last night, she made a brief appearance at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, where she stole the show. Or so Twitter tells me.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I didn’t watch the Emmys because life is too short to indulge Michael Che and Colin Jost. It’s not even that I’m boycotting them for their sexism and ruthless ignorance as much as I’m just avoiding things I despise. Like, I’m not about to eat a sandwich of anchovies and toenails, but it’s not a matter of principle against the fishing or nail trimming industries. I’m just sparing myself an experience I predict would be awful, because I have a good sense for my own tastes. But I’m getting off point.

Men. They fail upwards and can’t take a joke, and last night they had to—for one minute—deal with being the punchline. Welcome to the club, fellas!

Heads up: “What are jokes these days, we don’t know,” could well be a barb directed at Norm MacDonald, who recently admitted he hasn’t seen Nanette yet still questioned its comedy credentials, OR it could be a subtle dig at Che, who posted a seemingly anti-Nanette rant on social media, before it vanished. ANYHOW, following this brief bit, Twitter went wild for Gadspy.
