Season 5 of 'Community' Ends Essentially on a Dare

Community has not officially been renewed for season five yet, and truth be told, with The Blacklist, The Voice, Sunday Night Football, and two well-performing sitcoms on Tuesday (About a Boy, Growing Up Fisher), it’s not the struggling network it once was, which necessitated the need to renew perennially low-rated shows like Parks and Recreation and Community. Fortunately, it still hasn’t figured out its Thursday night line-up yet, and after having already renewed Parks, NBC is going to need to renew Community or else …

And so last night’s season finale for the first time in a few seasons didn’t feel like it could double as a series finale. It was a good episode, but it wasn’t the epic kind of Dan Harmon episode you’d imagine the show would eventually go out on. It felt as though he’d left something in the tank, and he wanted to the audience to know that, as well, so if NBC did have the gall to cancel the series, the fans would rise up and burn NBC/Universal to the ground (who’s with me?!)

Though it was probably the best season since the second one, the passion for the show is not there as much as it once was: The Annie GIFs have subsided, the Community fan-art has waned, and Dan Harmon has reduced the level of drama. It helps that he also has the brilliant Rick and Morty to work on, which strangely almost gets as many viewers as Community these days, and that Chevy Chase is no longer around to stir up any drama. In other words, the audience seems content. Dan Harmon seems content. Everyone seems happy with the show, and there was nothing in the season finale to change that.

It was a good episode. They saved Greendale (for now), Britta and Jeff’s brief and ridiculous engagement ended, and the Annie/Jeff ship launched back out to sea. And now Chang is on the school board, so he has something else to do next season (unfortunately, Jonathan Banks — who was the perfect substitute for Chevy Chase, may be too tied up with Better Call Saul to return as a regular next season).

Will there be a next season? There kind of has to be now, doesn’t there? The only question is, when?

God bless, Dan Harmon. Even with the uncertainty of Community’s renewal, he doesn’t shy away from taking digs at the network. And NBC’s hands are tied. Do they really want to let down this woman?

Of course not.
