If you have not yet seen the first season of HBO’s Succession, I am so sorry for your life. The subject material is obviously completely different, but it has the same sort of novelistic feel to it as seasons of The Wire. It has a similar sensation to reading a really fantastic novel, only you’ve got some of the best actors in the business delivering these deliciously twisted lines with ferocity (Brian Cox), cluelessness (Alan Ruck), dry humor (Sarah Snook), drollness (Kieran Culkin), hilarious manic psychosis with a touch of endearment (Matthew Macfadyen) or a sort of insecure bluster (Nicholas Braun). It’s one of the best casts on television.

Loosely inspired by the Murdoch family, like Game of Thrones, it’s a show about ruthless backstabbing, treachery, scheming, and power grabbing, all in pursuit of control of a large multinational conglomerate. And the thing is: All the backstabbing and treachery takes place in one family. It’s like if the Lannisters owned a huge media corporation. They’re all terrible people, but it’s so much fun to watch these characters come so close to the “Iron Throne” only to crash and burn publicly, to see them stripped of their dignity and forced to climb the wall again from the bottom.

I love it so much. It is so very my jam.

Anyway, here’s the trailer for season two, which will debut sometime in August.
