Scoring Last Night's Josh Hutcherson Hosted 'Saturday Night Live': Come for HAIM, Stay for the F**king Turkey

Cold Open — Taran Killam’s Piers Morgan kicks off the show with a slightly edgy, and mostly funny indictment of George Zimmerman, George Zimmerman’s girlfriend, Florida (and its police department) and, uh, the founder of Men’s Wearhouse, George Zimmer (that last part probably should’ve been excised). Kate McKinnon is the fetching highlight. (Score: 6/10)

Josh Hutcherson Monologue — They go with a Hunger Games open, beginning with Kate McKinnon’s FANTASTIC Effie (and wow, that was an impressively quick transition from the last sketch and into her Effie outfit). Not a hugely successful monologue, but Hutcherson is actually charmingly self-deprecating (and way likable), especially about his Hunger Games’ character. (Score: 5/10)

The Girlfriends Show — I’m not even sure what this recurring sketch about, what the point is, or why it exists. But I do know it’s very bad, and that I hate it. (Score: 2/10)

Mr. Patterson — One of the new guys, Beck Bennett, shows off a new character: He’s a highly successful business executive, who has the body of the baby. The impersonation of a baby while he’s trying to figure out his movements is so uncanny that there’s no way this guy doesn’t have a newborn at home. It is perfect. The sketch is OK, but the impersonation is solid. (Score: 7/10)

Subway Dancers — A pre-taped segment in which Jay Pharaoh, Hutcherson, and Kenan Thompson have perfected the art of confined B-Boy dancing on a crowded subway train. The idea is funny (kind of), but the sketch decidedly is not. (Score: 3/10)

Weekend Update — An edition of “Weekend Update” unusually heavy on headlines, with only one guest. The headline jokes themselves? Eh. Great Road Runner joke, and an awesome Beiber punchline. (Score: 6/10)

The Worst Lady on an Airplane — You’d think that by now every joke about terrible airline passengers would have already been told, and you’d be exactly right. (Score: 3/10)

I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love Tonight — A description could not do it justice. It’s impossibly low-concept, and absolutely brilliant. Love. (Score: 9/10)

Josh Hutcherson - Josie Sketch (Your Love… by IdolxMuzic

NOT THESE GUYS AGAIN — It’s Moynihan and Strong’s recurring characters, in which they call out all their co-workers because they think they’re about to be fired. Actually, it still works. Hutcherson is terrible in the sketch (I mean, terrible), but Moynihan and Strong are great. It’s probably the best recurring sketch going with the existing cast, which I realize is not saying much, but Taran Killam’s death stare and the guy who eats Garfield’s ass are pretty great. (Score: 7/10)

The Nightcrawlers — The weekly esoteric Kyle Mooney sketch is not as good as previous installments, but it’s a fine sketch, although they always feel completely out of place on SNL. Dude needs his own 12-minute weird-sketch show on Adult Swim. (Score: 6/10)

Animal Hospital — I don’t know what it says about Hutcherson that his best performance tonight was as a gay, Southern office assistant in a Vet’s office, but the sketch continues a strong second-half for the show. Southerners will most certainly recognize versions of these people, while those that do not will probably hate this sketch. (Score: 7/10)

Bugs — No. (Score: 2/10)

Thanksgiving Dinner — Hutcherson’s character brings his new girlfriend home for Thanksgiving, and she’s a Turkey. A f**king Turkey. It’s so incredibly dumb (so, so dumb) that it actually works. (Score: 7/10)

Haim — I didn’t know a lot about Haim before the show tonight, but they were terrific. Good music, great vibe, neat performances. Naturally, Twitter seems split between those that loathe them, and those that adore them. I kind of want to marry tem and raise impossibly hipster daughters who are gorgeous despite their terrible hair. (Score: 9/10)
