After three years as the co-host of Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off, Sandi Toksvig has announced that she’s stepping down from cake duties to focus on other projects. Toksvig, alongside Noel Fielding, took on the unenviable task of replacing Mel and Sue when the show controversially moved from BBC One to Channel 4, but found herself a legion of fans with her presenting duties and willingness to wear silly costumes. In a statement (via Deadline), Toksvig said:

When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family. Unusually I am departing from The Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work.

As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show. Spending time with Prue [Leith], Paul [Hollywood] and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television. Bake Off is a wonderful program which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel. The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.

One of Toksvig’s upcoming projects is another Channel 4 show called The Write Offs, which will focus on adult literacy. The hunt for a new Bake Off co-host is on. Who will be a great fit for the format and the perfect partner for raven detective Noel? Who has the courage, the tenacity, and the free-wheeling ability with naughty food puns? And can we still blame Sandi’s departure on Paul Hollywood, as we blame him for all Bake Off-related problems? Stay tuned to find out more!
