Remember what we all loved about the first season of Stranger Things? That it was a nostalgia-tinged ’80s remix of Spielberg and Carpenter, a fairly small-scale story about a group of D&D-playing kids investigating some weird activity on their bikes and Winona Ryder going full B-movie actress? It was Close Encounters, and E.T., and The Thing all wrapped into a fun, intimate coming of age story! And there was also Barb!
Stranger Things 4 Vol. 1, based on the trailer, is more like when U2 got weird and sonic and super serious and pretentious and sang songs about lemons. It’s big now! Huge! There’s a “war” and our small-town sheriff with the gruff charm is … something else entirely, and it looks like they spent a fortune on a spectacle that will completely overshadow what we loved most about Stranger Things: The characters. Nobody asked for New Coke, people!
Also, is there a guy who is going to save the world with his guitar? The trailer is exhausting. I’m exhausted.
Stranger Things 4 Vol. 1 (never trust a double album, folks!) premieres on May 27th.
