It is truly incredible that we are alive at the same time as Simone Biles. Watching her work is to see the amazing feats that the human body is capable of. in addition to her being so incredible, she also continues a legacy in gymnastics that is rich with African Americans exuding their excellence. Just ask The Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr.
Roy has been doing a series of videos called “CP Time”. In them, he explores the history of Black people and has done so for years. This week, he focused on gymnastics. Using The Daily Show’s signature blend of informative comedy, Wood Jr. presents a segment both eye-opening and hilarious.
We should celebrate Simone Biles for all that she is and does. We should also celebrate the fact that Black people have excelled at gymnastics for quite some time. They’ve also faced adversity, despite their excellence, and managed to rise above it. Succeeded in spite of it. That deserves to be celebrated too. Heck, let’s throw a whole damn Black gymnasts party! As long as I am not asked to do … any jumping or twisting or … general exercise.
No one wants to see that.
