Good morning, Pajibans. I’m on a family vacation in lovely San Deigo (the twins turned 12 yesterday) so not around as much this week to be your huckleberry. (I am chuffed about that special election victory in NY!) For now, I’m an East Coast man waking up on the West Coast, so there’s some time to put together a Renewals and Cancellations (with a bit of casting).
Hulu has canceled This Fool. I have not seen This Fool, but it’s on my list, and it was near the top, I swear. I have heard great things about the Michael Imperioli/Chris Estrada series, but it has become another casualty of the “I’ll get around to it, I swear!” mentality. And yet, we watch Fool Me Once.
Limitless with Chris Hemsworth has gotten another season at Disney+/NatGeo. I didn’t see this, either, but I heard great things about it, as well, mostly about how Hemsworth is as superhuman in reality as he is in the movies. I feel like this show may have also popularized the ice bath? Or at least, I started hearing about ice plunges after Hemsworth did it in this series.
Disney+ also picked up another season of Goosebumps.
Abbott Elementary was renewed for a fourth season the day after the third season debuted. I’m sure the network just wanted to make sure the audience continued to stick around (we did) before renewing. This one will run for seven seasons, a rarity not just for a comedy but for any series these days.
Netflix has picked up Survival of the Thickest starring Michelle Buteau for a second season. I thought this was a reality series. It is not. It’s a comedy, and based on the trailer, it looks OK!
Loudermilk is six years old, and aired initially on DirectTV’s Audience Network before landing on Prime and then landing on Netflix, where the Ron Livingston series has finally found a huge audience. I am not among that audience, yet, despite Netflix’s clear attempts to make me a viewer. I have seen the teaser a dozen times. In any respect, its newfound popularity has creator Peter Farrelly trying to put together a fourth season. Are grouchy white guys in again? And where is John C. McGinley when we need him?
In casting: Molly Shannon has joined the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, which will move to Los Angeles.
I’m intrigued by Starz’s forthcoming The Hunting Wives based on the novel by May Cobb. Brittany Snow has joined the cast as co-lead. She’ll play a woman who moves from the East Coast to deep East Texas, where she “succumbs to socialite Margo Bank’s irresistible charms - and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction and murder.” Malin Akerman plays Margo Banks. I like these two together in a series like this, and Akerman seems perfectly cast.
Finally, Scarlett Johansson will make her debut as a television series lead in Just Cause, which comes from creator Cord Jefferson (American Fiction, Watchmen). The series is based on a 1992 novel from John Katzenbach, which was made into a Sean Connery movie in 1995. Interestingly, Johansson played the daughter of the Sean Connery character in the movie when she was 10 years old. She is now playing the Sean Connery character, a journalist investigating the case of a death row inmate who insists he’s innocent. That investigation uncovers a conspiracy.
