The expensive Three Body Problem, which I loved but had ratings that were good but not great, came out in March and was renewed for two additional seasons in May. The Gentlemen, meanwhile, came out the week before 3 Body Problem and had outstanding ratings but was only renewed for a second season today. I wonder why it took so long (I’m not implying anything — I’m genuinely curious). It’s one of the five biggest hits of the year for Netflix. It should’ve been a no-brainer. Guy Ritchie will return to direct and write, along with co-writer Matthew Read.

Meanwhile, it didn’t take Netflix nearly as long to renew Supacell, also a no-brainer, as the series has quietly been one of the summer’s biggest hits for the streamer. It’s an enjoyable six-episode series that definitely deserves a second season.

Speaking of enjoyable, Peacock’s Traitors, which had already been picked up for a third season, has been renewed today for a fourth and fifth season. That’s also great news, as the series has joined my family’s annual rotation of reality shows, along with GBBO, Top Chef, Survivor, and The Amazing Race.

It’s been a while since we did a renewals and cancellations post, so we’re going to reach back a couple of weeks for the following. First up, Hulu canceled Amy Schumer’s Life & Beth after two seasons. I liked the first season! I was kind of bored with the second (and Schumer is not a particularly well-liked comedian these days, either).

Prime Video/Freevee had rescued Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney’s American Rust, which had been canceled by Showtime. Apparently, they couldn’t find any viewers, either, because it’s been canceled again. I found the first season so inert that I didn’t even bother with the second.

Prime Video has, however, renewed Hazbin Hotel (beloved by Gen Z), Invincible, and — surprisingly — Sausage Party: Foodtopia for additional seasons. People watched Foodtopia? The novelty of food having orgies ran out for me about 17 minutes into the original film.

Elsewhere, Max has canceled the Clone High revival after two seasons. I really meant to watch that! And I just never did. Sorry, Bill Lawrence, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller. I’m sure it was great.

Disney+ canceled Sally Wainwright’s Renegade Nell after one season. Outside of Marvel and Star Wars, the number of series that continue to produce new episodes is dismal. It’s basically Goosebumps, The Santa Clauses, and Percy Jackson. I’d honestly cancel Disney+ were it not for my kids, who insist I keep it for the movie library.
