Renewals and Cancelations: 'Percy Jackson,' 'Traitors,' 'Hijack,' and JK Rowling

It’s been a minute since we covered renewals and cancellations, so let’s go back to what I think is the best renewal of this week’s bunch: Paramount+ has picked up a second season of the phenomenal Colin from Accounts. Real-life husband and wife Patrick Brammall (the husband in Evil) and Harriet Dyer, the latter of whom American audiences may recognize from the short-lived American Auto, star in the funniest series in recent memory outside of Ted, god help me. If you have Paramount+, watch this first season ASAP. I cannot recommend it enough.

More recently, as in yesterday, Disney+ renewed Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a second season. It’s good. I’ve been watching it with the twins, although they’re both distracted by their massive crushes on the lead, Walker Scobell. It’s a little too YA for me, but it’s entertaining.

It’s been a while since Idris Elba’s ridiculous (but entertaining) Apple TV+ series Hijack finished its run (last summer). Apple TV+, however, has finally announced that they have renewed it, and Idris Elba will return for a second season. That show was idiotic, but it’s hard to deny how watchable it was.

Speaking of shows we haven’t heard from in a while, Ratched — the prequel series to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest — has finally been officially canceled. It last aired in September 2020. I very much doubt anyone was waiting around for a second season.

In other cancellation news, FX has not canceled Dave officially, but it appears that FX and Lil Dicky have mutually agreed to hit pause on the series, which may or may not be the end. It’s a wild show, and I’m not sure how they top the third season with Rachel McAdams and Brad Pitt, but Dave Burkett has other pans on the stove.

Netflix did not wait long to cancel Obliterated, which premiered in December 2023. It had an attractive cast and a somewhat amusing premise (bomb squad trying to track down and defuse a nuke while drunk AF), but that show wore out its welcome long before the credits rolled.

Strike, the Cormoran Strike series based on the novels of Robert Galbraith/J.K. Rowling, has been picked up for a sixth season by HBO/BBC. I’ve never seen an episode or read one of the novels, and screw J.K. Rowling, but also: I do love Holiday Grainger, and I wish her continued success.

Fox has renewed Animal Control for a third season ahead of its second season premiere. It’s not the comedy I guessed would survive beyond its first season, but the Joel McHale series is amusing, showed improvement over its first season, and has a decently original premise. I’m also happy to see Vella Lovell in a successful series.

Finally, Peacock has renewed Traitors for a third season. We haven’t talked about the second season yet, beyond our podcast, but we really should. It’s been a blast. Go, Parvati!
