Ranking the 7 Best Sketches from the Sofia Vergara-Hosted "SNL"

It’s Easter, so I’m going to keep this brief. Last night’s episode was pretty good. Not awesome, and not a catastrophe. Sofia Vergara has more comedic talent that I gave her credit for, and she’s willing to use her “assets” less to titillate (ahem) and more as a recurring punchline. Given her thick accent, I was also impressed with how the writers used her, particularly her hilariously and intentionally terrible Fran Drescher impersonation.

Here were last night’s highlights, the best seven sketches of the night.

1. Pantene Commercial — Kate McKinnon — “SNL’s” first openly gay cast member — made her debut last night, and she was terrific in this spot. I think she’s going to be a great addition.

2. Watch What Happens — I’m probably biased in favor of this sketch because I think Andy Cohen is the most obnoxious man on television, and I thought Taran Killam nailed it with less of a caricature and more a spot-on impression.

3. Bein’ Quirky with Zooey Deschanel — I didn’t love Bein’ Quirky the first time around, but both Sofia Vergara’s Fran Drescher and Kristen Wiig’s amazing Drew Barrymore impressions sold me.

4. Hunger Games Reporter — Vergara taking full advantage of her Vergara-ness.

5. Weekend Update Highlights and Drunk Uncle — The airline joke killed, and I found myself less annoyed with Drunk Uncle than usual, though perhaps it was because I felt a little like Drunk Uncle myself around 12:15 last night.

6. Almost Pizza — Creepy.

7. We’re Just Friends — This commercial was equal parts obnoxious and hilarious.

Worst Skit of the Night: Gilly. I loathe this character.

Musical Performance: One Direction. Oh God, boy bands are emo now? Dudes, you’re doing it wrong.

Happy Easter, y’all.
