Do you hear that scratching noise? That irritating squeak seemingly coming from nowhere? That’s the sound of the bottom of a barrel being thoroughly scraped.
I know comic book adaptations and superheroes are in right now, but I can’t say I saw anyone crying out for a series focused on Batman’s butler. Sure, Alfred’s a great character, but can anyone honestly say they read or watch any story set in Gotham because they’re mostly invested in the butler?
Well, Epix (a real channel) didn’t get that memo, because they’ve just picked up a series called Pennyworth for their schedule. Apparently, the show will focus on Alfred’s days in the special forces while working for Bruce Wayne’s father in London. It will also be unconnected to Fox’s own Batman prequel of sorts, Gotham, which is coming to an end in its next season.
I just want a decent Batman movie at this point. The DCEU has starved me of that basic requirement and it’s super unfair. Although, while we’re on that story, there’s not been much in the way of news regarding The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves. Apparently, Ben Affleck wants to stick this one out, amid multiple rumours that he’s desperate to leave the franchise (he was originally going to write and direct this film too). With the DCEU in its current state, you can never really trust any story going around. If you were to tell me that the film was being cancelled in favour of a toe-tapping musical about Two-Face, my response would be ‘Yup, seems legit.’ I mean, once the bar’s been lowered to ‘Alfred prequel gets series order’, where do you go from there?
