We’re used to hearing about the many creative collaborations between Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande (for my money, Side By Side is still one of the best — and suggestive — songs ever), so I like to imagine that their appearances on the CBS late night programs last night was more than just a coincidence. It was pure art.
Minaj dropped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote her new album, “Queen”, and the interview almost immediately went off the rails when Colbert pointed out that he wasn’t included in the long list of men she disses in her song “Barbie Dreams.” The reason is pretty simple: She clearly LOVES him, and wouldn’t diss him. Instead, she freestyled a fresh verse in his honor. And by “fresh” I mean explicit and embarrassing.
Colbert may be turning red, but you can tell Jon Batiste LOVES IT.
Then on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Grande joined Corden for a recreation of Titanic, told entirely through pop songs. In just over 5 minutes, the pair sang their way through a medley of 13 songs on 9 sets — in a single take. Using “Ice Ice Baby” when they spot the iceberg is a little on the nose, but the song they chose for the car-fucking/steamy window hand slap scene is *chef kiss* perfection.
I love these women — but I especially love how game they are for anything!
