Remember SNICK? Saturday Night Nickelodeon was not for babies. It was for big kids who enjoyed the sophisticated pleasures of such exemplary programming as the riveting coming-of-age dramedy Clarissa Explains It All, the daring sketch comedy of All That, and the unique terrors of Are You Afraid of the Dark? Children of the ’90s eagerly awaited this weekly ritual of settling down for TV made exactly for us. And if you were really brave, you watched the last of these shows with the lights off. You ain’t ‘fraid of no dark!

Well, now that children of the ’90s are having children of their own, Nickelodeon is rebooting Are You Afraid Of The Dark? for a new generation of gonna-be horror-lovers. And they’ve just dropped the first teaser, which is boasting some pretty excellent practical effects:

Personally, I’m a big proponent of giving kids horror stories that work on their level. Kids experience fear no matter how cozy, safe, or privileged their lives may be. Telling them not to be afraid is rarely helpful, as it rejects their emotion instead of empathizing with their perspective. This is where scary stories come in. Give them a place to experience fear and ride through it with a fun, spooky TV show. It’s one way of teaching them how to cope with fear. Plus, it looks like it could be fun for the whole family.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? returns to Nickelodeon this October.
