My cousin Evan is about 15 years older than me. He was the cool cousin who visited while he was in college. Evan knew the most incredible video games (which were any) and the funniest jokes (which were any he would tell). One time, Evan learned that we had just been introduced to Star Wars. He didn’t like Star Wars. He was a Spaceballs fan. Evan rented it at the local video store, showed it to use, and since then, Mel Brooks has been a part of my life.

Spaceballs remained my favorite for years, but History of the World: Part I was a close second. It was silly, and there was singing, and as an adolescent boy heading into my teens, I appreciated the countless cleavage jokes. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Mel Brooks. I want to think that I would keep my cool. Though, I’m sure that wouldn’t be easy. Look what happened to Nick Kroll!

Let me start by saying that this story has a happy ending. Nick (along with Wanda Sykes and Ike Barinholtz) helped create a new sequel to History of the World: Part I called History of the World: Part II! You can watch it now! To get there, Nick had to face a little embarrassment first. Years ago, Nick was attending an event and saw Mel Brooks there. Being a huge fan, he walked up to say hi. In addition to saying hi, he said, “I have an idea for a remake of The Producers.” Mel said, “do your own work,” and the rest is History (of the world part 2)!

I haven’t gotten to dive into the new History of the World yet (twins, work, etc.). I was already looking forward to it, but hearing Nick talk about it increased my excitement. Not only does it sound like it was a blast, but he also got to work with a hero of his. I don’t know Nick Kroll, but I love that kind of full-circle stuff. He didn’t get to remake The Producers, but that’s not the biggest loss.
