In today’s perfect casting news, Meryl Streep is joining the lovely ladies of Monterey in the upcoming return of HBO’s Big Little Lies. I mean, the fact that Meryl Streep is joining anything qualifies as “perfect casting news” by the very nature of her inherent perfection, but that’s not what I’m talking about. In this particular case, the casting is perfect because Streep in coming on board to play Mary Louise Wright…

Perry’s MOTHER.

And if you haven’t watched Big Little Lies Season 1, watch out for oncoming SPOILERS

Perry, played by Alexander Skarsgård, was married to Celeste (Nicole Kidman). He also was abusive, and had previously raped Jane (Shailene Woodley). These tangled threads come unravelled over the course of the series, culminating in his death at the hands on ANOTHER character, Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz). The central women all band together to claim his death was an accident.

And now Perry’s mom, Meryl Goddamn Streep, is gonna ride into town looking for answers. I can’t wait to see her go toe to toe with Nicole Kidman! Talk about a battle of the titans!

Big Little Lies won eight Emmys, and its return was confirmed in December by HBO. David E. Kelley will continue writing the series, though directing duties have passed from Jean-Marc Vallée to Oscar winner Andrea Arnold. Shooting is expected to commence this spring, and according to Variety Streep could be earning $800,000 per episode. And she’s worth every fucking cent.
