Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone have a solid marriage, if a 27-year relationship is anything to go by. Their professional collaborations, on the other hand, often leave much to be desired. Which is fine! They’re not great, but neither are they so awful as to be embarrassing or offensive. Now they’re trying again, this time with a new Netflix series called God’s Perfect Idiot. Falcone plays Clark Thompson, a techie who becomes romantically involved with coworker Amily Luck (McCarthy) after he’s struck by lightning and chosen by God to help save the world.
It doesn’t look terrible? Which is the McCarthy/Falcone niche. With the Horse
menpeople and angels it feels a bit like a rip-off of Good Omens, but it’s not like this isn’t a well-established trope by now. From Wonderfalls to God Friended Me, from Dear God to Bruce Almighty, God picking an everyday shlub to save us all from our many, many mistakes is a tale as old as time. And McCarthy is a stone-cold comedic genius. I may be one of a handful of people on the planet to love The Happytime Murders, but between that and Spy she’s earned a ton of wiggle room in my book.
God’s Favorite Idiot’s 8 episodes all drop on June 15, only on Netflix.
