Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show often presents a casual atmosphere. It gives off the energy of friends, or, I dunno, siblings, hanging out, making each other laugh and playing games. That method doesn’t always work (every late-night show has its hiccups) but when it does work, it’s magic. That magical feeling is what I got watching Maya Rudolph do the “Mimic Challenge.”
Let’s start with the obvious: Maya Rudolph is a force of comedy nature that cannot be quieted. She can move effortlessly back and forth between silly and straight with expert timing. Watching her is like watching a genius at work, and I mean that sincerely. She brought me a much-needed laugh, sitting here in a hospital room, awaiting the arrival of my twins, and I can’t wait to watch her host SNL on Saturday (hopefully while holding said twins).
It should go without saying, but Jimmy Fallon likes to laugh. Every now and then I see people say that his laughter is fake or forced. Sometimes it is (though again this happens to every late-night host). However, with Rudolph at his side, the laughter felt real as ever. Having funny friends is a luxury and luxuries are made to be… luxuried?
Anyway! Take some time and enjoy some friends making each other laugh. In person! It’s a great feeling and one I miss dearly. I can’t wait to be back in a room, with friends, playing a game, telling them to be quiet so my twins can get some sleep.
I’m gonna be honest, I may be distracted right now …
