Mahershala Ali in Talks For "True Detective" Season 3

True Detective season 1 was lightning in a bottle TV, sparking critical and audience adoration as well as forming a key part of the McConnaissance. Season 2? Eh, not so much. Many feared that the zeitgeist had passed and Nic Pizzolatto off the leash without director Cary Fukunaga proved too exhausting to deal with. Although the season does have its defenders, the news of a third season didn’t enthuse many until the name David Milch entered the frame. The Deadwood creator, who’s had a string of bad luck recently, was announced to be in talks to write with Pizzolatto on a third season, so colour us intrigued.

Now, we may actually care because Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is in early discussions to join the season. Obviously, this is still early days and it could all fall apart but the world would never think to be so cruel to us, right? We’ve struggled enough these past few months so giving us a weekly dose of Mahershala is the least the universe can do to right the karmic fuckery of recent times. You know who would be the perfect on-screen partner for Ali in a third season of True Detective?

Ali is obviously no stranger to TV, thanks to scene stealing work on Netflix’s Luke Cage and House of Cards, as well as HBO’s Treme and USA’s The 4400 (remember that one?). Upcoming movie work includes Sundance competition entry Roxanne Roxanne and Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of the anime Alita: Battle Angel.
