Good pop music has a way of elevating your feelings. If you need help letting yourself cry, you throw on a sad song. Do you want to get amped before a game? Throw on a rock song. When you’re so in love that you want to tell everyone you know, you put on some Burt Bacharach (that’s what I do). Bacharach was one of the greatest songwriters that pop music has ever seen. He passed away yesterday, at the age of 94, in his Los Angeles home.

Bacharach was a behemoth in the pop music world. He won eight Grammys, three Oscars, and more than 70 top 40 hits. He wrote hit songs like I Say A Little Prayer, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and my favorite, Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do). His horn-heavy orchestrations and airy melodies were performed by some of the world’s greatest artists and Twitter users (I’m looking at you, Miss Warwick).

One of my favorite things about Bacharach is that I still discover songs that he has written to this day. I knew he was prolific, but it’s truly staggering. For instance, in writing this article I learned that Bacharach co-wrote That’s What Friends Are For. I had no idea! It makes perfect sense, but I had no idea. Bacharach didn’t even have to adapt his style to stay relevant. Good music has no age limit.

There is also the message of Bacharach’s work. He emphasized love. He highlighted the magic and dizziness, and carefree nature of love. He took those feelings and bottled them and turned them into groovy music that can put a tear in your eye and a smile in your heart. Raindrops could be falling on your head or a guy with a pin could be bursting your bubble, and it wouldn’t matter. Burt had you covered.

Burt Bacharach lived a long, creative life, and the world was better for it.
