If you would have told me yesterday that one of the most revealing pieces on the attempted insurrection by Trump supporters would come from Comedy Central … honestly, I probably would have believed you. That doesn’t make the latest piece by Jordan Klepper any less shocking. Klepper, who has put his own mental and physical health at risk by attending several Trump rallies over the years on behalf of The Daily Show, was at the Capitol Building, with a camera crew, to witness firsthand just how frightening the day was.

Almost immediately, it’s clear that this rally won’t be like the others he’s attended. Maybe it’s the benefit of hindsight, or maybe it’s the intensity of the people he interviews. They seem more unhinged than usual and the ones who aren’t unhinged are… dodgy. There are more blurred faces, meaning they’d speak to him but not sign a release form. Several people give him short, curt answers, which strikes a vastly different tone than usual. It’s eerie.

It also doesn’t help that asshats like Rudy Giuliani, Donald “Please Love Me, Daddy” Trump Jr., and soon-to-be ex-President Trump himself were there stoking the flames. After seeing the crowds and their belligerence, Jordan cuts to the three traitors I just mentioned and… context is key, y’all. They can try to deny their influence all they like, but they got that crowd fired up. This is on them, clear as day.

If it were up to me, Klepper and his team would get an award for this segment, especially his cameraman who was tackled. We know now just how dangerous this day was but they were right up in there and making fun of these people. To their faces. If they were smart enough to get the jokes he was making, things may have ended differently. Instead, we can just watch this video, be in awe of Klepper and his team, and hope as much as possible that he never has to cover something like this again.
