I love New York City. I’ve lived here for 14 years, which is longer than I’ve lived anywhere. It’s my home. Like most homes, sometimes it sucks. The latest example of New York suckery involves a host of Anti-Vaxxers protesting a vaccine mandate and Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper. Strap in, folks, ‘cause it’s about to get real depressing up in here!
Klepper has spent years talking to Trump supporters at various rallies. Usually, he’ll have to go to the middle of the country to find such a collection of shmucks. This time he was able to stick to NYC. The people he speaks to have a habit of proudly ignoring proven facts. It’s maddening. I have no idea how he still does it. Especially after this latest video.
It’s hard to explain just how bad it was in New York at the beginning of the pandemic. I barely left my one-bedroom apartment. When I did, it was to walk to a grocery store several miles away (it didn’t observe senior hours) at 6:30 AM to avoid crowds. When I got home, I would strip down and throw my clothes in the washing machine because we still weren’t sure how the virus traveled.
I had to watch the Broadway industry, one I have worked for for the better part of a decade, screech to a horrific halt. It was devastating. It is still devastating. Life, as we knew it here, was completely flipped on its head. Needless to say, watching a handful of New Yorkers actively stand in the way of a return to safety and normalcy makes my blood boil.
This is all made worse by the fact that they don’t know what they’re talking about! Most of the people Klepper talks to crumble under the slightest scrutiny (as is tradition). Their arguments hold no water. At this point it’s not even funny, it’s just sad.
Is my spirit crushed? Yes. Do I still love New York? F*** yes. It’s not all bad. The neighborhood I live in (where my Heights people at?!) and the people in it have been great at getting vaccinated, masking up, and social distancing. All things I appreciate because even vaccinated people can pass the Delta variant to my beautiful baby boys. New York will be back someday, even if a bunch of dumb f***s try to stand in the way.
