In 1997 I was living in New Orleans. Football wasn’t my favorite sport, but the Packers won the Super Bowl that year, and you could hear the celebrations from my family’s small apartment. From that point on, I was a Packers fan. The first jersey I ever owned was a Green Bay Packers jersey with Favre written on the back. Having that jersey was the worst. Kids constantly teased me, assuming that the name was spelled wrong because most kids are dumb (especially the mean ones). Little did I know, they should have been teasing me for wearing that man’s name on my person. Not because Favre was misspelled. It’s because Favre is a low-down dirty bastard.

My enjoyment of football did not last (it started to decline with the response to Colin Kaepernick and hit a peak with that whole “assuming Black people’s brains are different” thing). Being a Brett Favre fan ended a lot sooner. Once I was old enough to realize he was a big old conservative, I pumped the brakes on my fandom. It helped that Favre had been replaced by Aaron Rodgers. Nothing problematic there! It’s not always easy to write someone off simply because of their political views (but you should try it). Sometimes you need that person to expose their shittiness more explicitly.

In the recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the eponymous host took an in-depth look at the improper allocation of welfare funds. Hundreds of thousands of people don’t receive the help they need because those funds are being “creatively” pushed into other areas. In Oklahoma, money was used to start a service that keeps hetero (and, I assume, white) couples together. In Mississippi, Brett Favre convinced officials to use welfare funds to build a volleyball training facility at the college his daughter attended. If that sounds messed up, it’s because it is!

Favre is apparently paying the money back (albeit without interest), but text messages show he knew what he was doing was wrong and did it anyway. Given how the rich and famous get away with so much in this country, it’s easy to assume that getting caught won’t hurt Favre. Do you know what would hurt him? A football to the groin. Luckily, such a video exists and Oliver includes it in his newest segment. Watch it and enjoy.

Screw you, Brett Favre. I hope your children aren’t successful at whatever careers you try to buy them with welfare dollars.
