“These two should never be in a sketch together; they both laugh too much,” said my wife, acting as some sort of Late Night Nostradamus. Kristin Wiig, out promoting Wonder Woman 1984, sat down with Jimmy Fallon to play a Mimic Challenge. One person makes a noise with a household item (scissors, fishing rod, dog toy) and the other person has to recreate the noise. The two SNL alums laughed almost the entire time and ya know what? It was delightful.

For most of the year, late-night guests have been forced to conduct interviews and perform segments via Zoom. It’s been tough to watch. Lots of good has come from it, sure, but the magic of late-night talk shows is accentuated by live audiences and in-person shenanigans. With both those elements missing for most of this year, it was truly enjoyable to just watch these two have fun.

Slowly but surely, all of the late-night hosts have found ways to get guests back into the studio and those interviews and segments have been standouts. As for the lack of audience, it seems there was a memo sent out to the crew that if they find something funny then they should laugh. It almost makes things feel like they’re back to normal!

Any other year I may not have wanted to watch two people just laughing through a segment. But in this, the year of our lord 2020, I’m more than happy to watch people enjoy what they do. Maybe I’m getting soft? Or, just maybe, this year has made me appreciate… anything that isn’t on Zoom.
