Last night, Jenna Fischer appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her new show Splitting Up Together. And she did it in a towel. Why? Allow her to explain.

“I’m a Missouri girl, and the show must go on.” That’s what Fischer said when the zipper on her elegant red dress betrayed her ahead of her appearance on the nationally televised talk show. And okay, I love that someone at Jimmy Kimmel Live! went to the effort of finding a tiny white body mic to match that towel. Plus, she had fun with it, declaring, “I’ve never been more comfortable.” But I have questions.

First up, presumably she’s wearing the jeans she had on when she arrived at the studio. Where’s the shirt that went with it? Are we to assume she showed up topless? My guess is maybe it was an uninspired top, like a t-shirt, or maybe it had a logo on it, so it was vetoed by the show’s producers.

Okay. So, a talk show that does sketches and has a fully costumed host and band couldn’t lend the girl a dress shirt or something? A production assistant couldn’t be sent on a mission to Target? A personal assistant couldn’t give up the shirt off their back? Also, someone from costuming 100% sewed her snugly into that towel, because you don’t have a rack like that AND a heavy mic pack and trust a towel in front of a live studio audience. So costuming had time for that, but not to stitch her into that pretty red dress?

I’m saying this smells fishy.

I suspect that Fischer made up this playful tale of a wardrobe malfunction so she could be cheerfully racy and draw attention to a show that otherwise seems to be scoring little notice, drowned out by its Tuesday night frontrunner Roseanne. So you know what? Good for her. Kimmel’s talk show is a perfect venue for this kind of crowd-pleasing celebrity silliness, even if it’s made of lies.
