As we mentioned yesterday, episodes of Jeopardy! are taped so far in advance that contestants aren’t privy to the news stories that episodes that aired previous to theirs might have generated. For instance, James Holzhauer’s began taping his episodes of Jeopardy! in March, and Emma Boettcher taped the episode in which she took down the 33-day champion around the time that Holzhauer’s streak began.

In other words, when Boettcher’s episodes aired, she didn’t know the name James Holzhauer until they informed her before her first episode taped that she’d be playing a guy with a 33-day streak. She didn’t even know who the guy was, much less his Jeopardy! strategy, which probably explains the shrugging eyeroll that Boettcher gave Trebek after her Daily Double wager in last night’s episode.

That’s a look that says, “What? I was influenced by the guy I just met and defeated? I have my own strategy, thank you very much, Trebek.”

I understand the desire to keep a storyline on Jeopardy! running for viewers at home, who are experiencing these episodes one day at a time, but at the same time, let the woman who kicked James Holzhauer’s ass enjoy a storyline separate from that of Holzhauer.

Boettcher, by the way, pulled off a win in her second match. She bet $0 on Final Jeopardy because she was far enough ahead that she didn’t have to wager anything. She won $24,600 to bring her two-day total to over $71,000.
