Most shows take a while — often an entire season — to figure out its voice. Not so with Issa Rae’s Insecure, which came onto the scene in 2016 with richly drawn characters and a creative vision firmly intact. Fictional Issa may have been figuring her shit out, but Rae was absolutely fearless in her certainty. The show somehow managed to get even better in the second season, even as everyone’s personal lives got even messier onscreen. Issa and Lawrence finally extricated themselves from each others’ lives, but how much pain did they go through to get to that devastating final confrontation in their old apartment?
Season two ended with (spoiler alert) Issa’s questionable decision to crash with Daniel while she figures out her living situation, and season three’s tease offers a stark reminder of her current life choices. Is there anything more charming than Rae rapping at the Mirror Bitch? Nothing comes to mind.
Insecure will finally return for its third season on August 12, and I cannot wait. MOLLY, PLEASE REALIZE THAT YOU DESERVE BETTER.
