HBO’s Hacks aired to little initial fanfare back in May 2021 thanks to a combination of limited marketing and being drowned out by the collective chatter (roar?) of Mare of Easttown approaching its anticipated finale and the complicated reception of The Nevers. Many people had no knowledge of the series whatsoever until Emmy Awards night, when Hacks unexpectedly snagged three awards out of its impressive fifteen nominations, including Best Actress for lead Jean Smart and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, an impressive feat considering the dominance of a little show called Ted Lasso. Flocks of viewers soon followed and, with it, fervent word-of-mouth as fans began to crawl out of the woodwork to sing the show’s praises. Over the show’s ten episodes, we watched as legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and discontented writer-for-hire, Ava (Hannah Einbinder), battle it out and work together in equal measure. Created by Lucy Aniello, Jen Statsky (best known for their previous work on Broad City), and Paul W. Downs, who also brings his comedic talents to the role of Jimmy, the agent Deborah and Ava share, the series is hilariously funny and poignant (occasionally very dark) at different turns. While the first season finale brought a brief moment of peace between these two contentious women, it also left us on a mild cliffhanger, with Ava receiving word that her regrettable act of vengeance will soon be coming to light.

For those of you that have been waiting for word on season two, wonder no more, as HBO has provided us with not only a release date, but a teaser trailer as well:

While few details can be gleaned from that teaser—my biggest takeaways being that we’re going to be blessed by Ming-Na Wen’s presence, along with a murderers’ row of performers the likes of Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, and Margaret Cho—we do know that the show will release two episodes a week and wrap up just in time for Emmy season once again. If the coming season is anything like its predecessor, the next round of award wins will be far less of a surprise this time around.

Season two of Hacks premieres on May 12th.
