Grant Morrison has long been one of my favorite comic book writers. Their stories, both superhero related and not, can range from grounded and grim to psychedelic and absurd, and sometimes all of that mixed together! I’m looking at you, Happy! However, it’s not just Morrison’s stories that make me a fan, I also love hearing them talk. About anything. No matter what the subject is, Morrison always offers a thoughtful take. Look at their recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers!

Morrison stopped by to promote their new novel Luda. Right off the bat, Morrison discusses the death of Queen Elizabeth II. There have been plenty of jokes at the Queen’s expense, as well as plenty of praise. Morrison fell somewhere in between, discussing what the Queen represented. I’m not saying any of the takes are correct (though I’d definitely lean one way over the others), I just appreciate that Morrison did not take their answer lightly.

One of my favorite aspects of the interview was Morrison comparing superheroes to drag stars. Again, it could be easy to joke, and they have fun with the discussion, but it’s thoughtful fun. And the comparisons they make are apt! Especially mentioning how Batman is dressed for the fetish club.

Towards the end of the interview, Morrison even gives thought-out answers about who puts air in the tires of the Batmobile. If Superman is immortal and indestructible, does he need to eat? If he does, is the food turned to waste? If not, will Supermans’s butt eventually seal up from lack of use? All this and more are tackled by Morrison, in only the way they can. We’re all the better for it.
