Gab.com Shut Down; Can Fox News Be Next?

It’s a weird time in American when I — a Commie pinko liberal — have more faith in capitalism than in our Democracy, but here we are. I mean, when the President attacked Colin Kaepernick, who was it that came to his rescue? Nike. When it was revealed that Bill O’Reilly had settled another lawsuit with women he sexually harassed, it was the advertiser boycott that forced him off the air. Alex Jones has been reduced to yelling at turds — literally — because capitalistic entities took his platforms away.

The latest is Gab.com, which is Facebook for Nazis (as opposed to Facebook, which is … Facebook for Nazis. (I kid, Zuckerberg! I kid! Please don’t take away the TENS of people that visit us from Facebook now)). I’d honestly never heard of Gab.com until this weekend, when we found out that the last message that Robert Bowers sent before shooting up a synagogue in Pittsburgh was delivered on Gab.com.

Bowers’ account was “verified,” and his bio read, that “jews are the children of satan.” Gab.com — a haven for white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and other far-right fringe groups — was pulled offline over the weekend. This is the message visitors get when they visit the site now.

Their hosting providers are in the process of booting them, and GoDaddy told them they have one day to transfer their domain.

This sounds a lot like Alex Jones about a month before he was found screaming at literal shit.

Gab.com continues to push the “free speech” narrative.

But again, this is not a First Amendment issue. This is a free enterprise issue. GoDaddy and the people who host Gab.com decided that it was too detrimental to their bottom line to keep associating with the kind of platform that links to this blog:

Hate is great for conservative politicians, but it’s not always so great for the bottom line, and thank God for that. But speaking of God, Kellyanne Conway was on Fox News this morning trying so very desperately to frame the shooting in Pittsburgh over the weekend as an assault on religion and blamed late-night comedians. And no, I’m not kidding. It’s 2018. You know better than to think I’m kidding.

Meanwhile, Kellyanne’s husband, George Conway, was tweeting this at about the same time:

But how do you stop Fox News from promoting lies and hate? Or continuing to inaccurately link George Soros to the caravan?

You can’t appeal to the President or Congress, obviously. We can boycott Fox News all we want, but it won’t do a damn bit of good because we’re not watching Fox News anyway, and there’s no way to convince Fox News viewers of the dangers of that network’s propaganda.

There’s kind of only one thing left to do: Use capitalism as a weapon. Boycott their advertisers. From WashPo:

The frightening thing is that the right-wing media will be here long after Trump and the current crop of Republican politicians are gone. These outlets have a First Amendment right to say what they want, but investors and advertisers also have a right to take their dollars elsewhere. If Rupert Murdoch and his sons won’t rein in its extremist propaganda, advertisers should flee Fox, and investors should flee its parent company, News Corp. Its stock should become as toxic as shares of mining companies that produce “blood diamonds.” The propagandists and politicians who are radicalizing the American right must not be allowed to escape responsibility for the dangerous consequences of their actions.
